Does Lighting Matter?
This post is all about Lighting! Photography is painting with light so the light is important! It's key in all genres of photography but especially in Portraits. No one wants to look awful in a photo and bad lighting can do that.
Headshot lighting is all about even, flattering light and light in the eyes. I studied this lighting technique created by and taught by Peter Hurley and it's the best out there for headshots. I use constant lights which are like video lights for headshots.
There is a second lighting set up for headshots that is a little more shadowy but still lights up the eyes- our most important feature in a headshot.
I mix things up some for Portrait Lighting- although still going for an even flattering light using either natural window light or strobes bounced off reflectors to look like window light. I love the look of window light! And that I can recreate it on dark winter days.
There are endless possibilities with Studio lighting. From light and airy to dark and dramatic.
Playing around and experimenting with lighting keeps photography challenging and exciting!
This article was only on in studio lighting. Shooting outside is a whole other post!
