How do I take a better iPhone photo?
While nothing can replace professional photos for professional and business uses, phone photos are perfect for capturing a moment with friends and family. This issue has a few tips on how to take better picture of people with your phone.
I've had people ask me this often! And while there are courses on now to take better pictures on your phone, I haven't taken one, so this is more artistic advice than technical.
First, use portrait mode. This mode brings you in closer and blurs the background some so it's just about the subject.
The phone doesn't completely blur out the background like some professional lens so also be mindful of what's behind the subject. Too much going on detracts from the subject.
All of these are shot on Portrait mode. The second one is framed in close enough to be about the subject. The last 2 were both in portrait mode but one has too much going on in the background which distracts from the subject.
Taking photos outside is great to take advantage of beautiful natural light. But avoid placing your subject in direct sunlight. Not only will they squint and be uncomfortable, the lighting is harsh and uneven. On sunny days, find some shade and have the subject stand right at the edge of the shade. Cloudy days can open up more options.
Indoor Photos
Indoors during daylight hours, put your back to a window and have the subject face the window. This is naturally diffused light and can work beautifully although is somewhat dependent on the time of day and strength and direction of the light.
Framing is one of the most important tips. Too far away and it's not about the subject at all. So remember to zoom in, get closer and check out what is happening behind the subject!
Hope these tips helped for taking your family and friends snapshots. Thanks to my college sons posing for the examples.
When the time comes for professional photos for you and your business, I would love to be who you think of! I specialize in people who hate getting their photo taken!
